Gaia question

So reading Abbey's section I had a thought concerning one of the questions brought up in the section.
Somebody questioning the concept of Gaia asks how it could be possible if certain creatures and components of the planet aren't aware of the overall scheme of the planet as a whole entity. My question then is, does a component of the Earth NEED to be aware of the big picture? Think of a human being. Does an arm truly know what the job of the leg is?

  1. I don't think that the Earth needs to be aware of the big picture, since for most human's the Earth is the big picture. I also think that although the Earth isn't a sentient being, nor does it have a true awareness, it can feel. For instance, when a forest is gone, and the ocean heats up, I think the Earth feels this, and tries to regulate and repair the damage it is sustaining. I also think it's important to notice how plants and animals seem more in tune and forewarned with that happens on our planet, than we as human's are until it happens. Maybe the Earth doesn't need to become aware of the full pictures, but human beings need to become aware instead.
