Cows. We talked about how there could be a perfect closed system of cow and dairy production. But instead we feed them corn which is not their usual diet, and we keep them penned up in warehouse and barns where the methane builds up over time. It seems that we took a perfect system and over time ruined it. So why are we trying to make this broken system work instead of moving back to a closed one?
I asked myself this question when we were going over it in class as well. I really liked that Professor Silliman brought up that man who had a very specific way of raising animals, while helping the animals surrounding environment flourish. I think that we should move more towards that, where we move the cows around, and let them grow into adult animals and not kill them, but wait until they die to use their meat. We would then be benefitting our environment, giving the animals a good life, and allowing ourselves the continues production of meat. The downfall of that is, like Professor Silliman said, meat's prices will increase and become rarer, which many people do not want. But I'd rather have good healthy food, as opposed to genetically modified, abused animal remains.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it would be more difficult to the masses to be on board with at first. However, Professor Silliman did also say his friend who loves eating meat has consumed less meat since switching to locally grown that is not genetically modified and loves the taste more. If more meat eaters could experience the taste, there would be hope! I think your idea of this new system is a great approach Chris!
